OBJECTS USA: 2024
Objects: USA 2024 celebrates the pathbreaking work of some of today’s most innovative American designers and artists.
Through nearly 100 objects by 55 visionary makers, the major survey exhibition challenges traditionally understood boundaries between fine art, craft, and design and captures the diversity of individuals propelling handmade processes in compelling new directions. Many of the featured works defy easy categorization, teetering between sculpture and functional furniture and between art objects and beautifully-crafted everyday tools.

“To engage audiences with this unique spectrum of works, the 2024 exhibition curators, Kellie Riggs and Angelik Vizcarrondo-Laboy, developed a fresh conceptual framework that emphasizes artistic motivations and establishes a new set of artistic archetypes— the Seven Archetypes of Objecthood: Truthsayers, Betatesters, Doomsdayers, Insiders, Mediators, Codebreakers, Keepers.”
The work made for this exhibition falls into the “DOOMSDAYERS” category.
DOOMSDAYERS
“In a moment of deep political polarization and high anxiety, the Doomsdayers download a plethora of societal and environmental concerns into objects fit for a not-so-distant tomorrow, caught between dystopic angst and utopic optimism. The makers in this group use digital, industrial, and analog processes that run the gamut, from ultraslick outer-space furnishings to ancient-looking relics recontextualized for a future civilization. The objects here take their meaning against the backdrop of a consumer landscape molded by capitalism, image oversaturation, and lightning-fast micro-trend cycles.
For some Doomsdayers, making is a way to reconcile the illusion of choice, which capsizes our self-actualization and the chance for a sustainable future. The cyber grunge attitudes and aesthetics on display show us how multiplicity acts both as a negative and a positive, from irresponsible mass production to new definitions of regeneration. Despite their ominous name, the Doomsdayers are planners, prop makers, and world-builders, designing hypothetical optimizations to our world through forms that appear distorted, shifting, or somehow in flux. For them, chaos is not the end but a portal to a new beginning.”

Careful, careful, petal and star collector, searching the space between places.
These are the garden atronachs, protectors of their garden realm– collectors of artifacts found in the makeshift gardens of $P4RKL3_FiLTH_CL0UD_NiN3.
P3T4L&&ST4R rule over their own temporal realm – one of night and one of day. Together they are devoted to each other, and to growing the garden in which they inhabit. Separately, they traverse the greenery and blooms, taking corporeal form. The spirits come out at their chosen twilight to collect and build.
That which hangs from their feet are what they have collected and reassembled, made to adorn their gardens, made to be artifacts of an in-between realm.
Artifacts made to fill the lacunae where the creatures of the garden coalesce – to create an ethereal devotion to the place in which they have built.
